Lamington Viaduct, Strathclyde

Part of the West Coast Main Line improvements the existing metal bridge was replaced by a new concrete bridge cast on site.

The new bridge was cast on new extended concrete piers reaching under the existing bridge, which remained in service while the new bridge was being prepared. The new concrete structure was waterproofed, ballast laid and tracks installed ready for the final connection to the end piers when the bridge slid into position.

In the final 36 hour possession the track and power were disconnected, the existing bridge was removed, the 20,000 tonne new bridge was slid sideways into place. As soon as the bridge was positioned the Kaligard PVC-P membrane was extended over the end piers and heat welded to the new end drains, the track and power were reconnected and trains were running again.
